The villa town
A walk through Bad Honnef’s streets is definitely worth it for those interested in architecture. The city is characterized by imposing half-timbered houses, representative villas from the “Gründerzeit“ period and beautifully decorated Art Nouveau houses. A building boom at the turn of the 19th century brought numerous acclaimed architects to the city. By order of wealthy citizens living in Bad Honnef, but especially of wealthy merchants and entrepreneurs from Cologne and the “Bergisches Land“, they provided impressive street fronts. Much of it has been preserved until today. A walk through Luisenstraße, Hauptstraße or Königin-Sophie-Straße still gives a good impression of the vivid building activity that took place over 100 years ago. The guide “Villen & Bauten“ (“Villas & Buildings”) informs about the history of numerous houses in Bad Honnef and their builders. It is available at the City Information Office.
